Which tax forms Kraken sends
According to Kraken’s tax forms FAQ, the forms for U.S. clients depend on the year:
- 2025 and later: Form 1099-DA for sales and other dispositions of digital assets on the Kraken exchange, including Kraken.com, Kraken Pro, and related apps.
- 2025 and later: Form 1099-MISC for staking rewards of $600 or more, now that Kraken’s U.S. staking program has resumed. Historically, this form also covered referral rewards and airdrops.
- 2024: no 1099 forms. Kraken says it issued no 1099-MISC for 2024 because its U.S. staking program closed in 2023, and no 1099-K or 1099-B either.
Kraken says the information on your forms goes to the IRS and to your state tax authority. If your activity does not reach the IRS thresholds for a form, Kraken says you receive an email instead, and your transaction data stays available in its Tax Center.
Does Kraken’s 1099-DA show cost basis?
- 2025 tax year: no. Kraken lists proceeds adjusted for fees, the sale date, the asset name and code, the number of units sold, and whether units were transferred in and how many.
- 2026 tax year: for newer positions. For positions acquired on or after January 1, 2026, Kraken says it adds the acquisition cost adjusted for fees, the acquisition date, the gain or loss, and whether it is short-term, long-term, or ordinary.
This matches the IRS instructions for Form 1099-DA: basis is required for covered assets acquired after 2025. Coins bought earlier or transferred in from elsewhere are noncovered, so their basis can stay blank. A blank basis is not a zero cost; see missing crypto cost basis.
What the forms do not cover
- Kraken Wallet and Ink. Kraken says the current broker rules apply only to the Kraken exchange, not to its DeFi apps; that activity may become reportable in later years.
- Sending crypto to someone else. Kraken notes that a reportable disposition also includes transferring a digital asset to another party, for example sending it to a third party with the Krak app.
- Other exchanges and wallets. Each platform reports only its own activity.
The IRS states that digital asset income, gains, and losses must be reported whether or not you receive a form, so the gaps are filled from your own records.
Where to find Kraken tax documents
- Use a computer. Kraken says tax forms and statements are available only on its websites, Kraken.com and Pro.Kraken.com, not in the mobile apps.
- Open the Tax Center for the forms issued to your account.
- Export your history from the Document Center. Kraken’s documents article lists account statements, balance history, trade history, and ledger history exports. Kraken Pro has its own document center.
Download and keep copies. Kraken says it keeps tax forms in your account history only for a limited time, typically seven years.
If your Kraken 1099-DA has not arrived
In its FAQ, last updated October 6, 2026, Kraken apologizes for delays with Form 1099-DA and says forms continue to appear in its Tax Center as they are generated. It also says the Tax Center transaction data is the same basis it uses to build the forms.
Do not wait for the form to start your records. Export the ledger and trade history, and compare them with the form once it arrives.
What your preparer may ask for
- Each Form 1099-DA and 1099-MISC from Kraken, and any corrected form.
- The ledger and trade history exports for the same year.
- Records for coins that arrived from other exchanges or wallets, with transaction IDs.
- Kraken’s U.S. entity details. Kraken’s FAQ lists the legal name, address, and taxpayer identification number that tax software or an accountant may request.
If Kraken does not match your software
- Compare proceeds first. One platform, one year; the Form 1099-DA mismatch guide lists the usual causes.
- Basis reported but different? Check the lot method on both sides; see 1099-DA cost basis mismatch.
- Transfers counted as sales? See wallet transfer reconciliation.
- Wrong information on the form? Kraken asks you to contact its support so it can correct the form; the IRS says it cannot correct a Form 1099-DA for you.

No. Kraken says tax forms and statements are available only on Kraken.com and Pro.Kraken.com from a computer.
Does the Kraken 1099-DA include Kraken Wallet?
No. Kraken says the current reporting applies to the Kraken exchange, not to its DeFi apps such as Kraken Wallet and Ink.
When a records review can help
If your Kraken history includes coins moved in from other platforms, Kraken Wallet activity, or a form that does not match your software, Elena’s 1099-DA reconciliation review compares the Kraken documents with your exports and wallet records and documents what explains each difference, within an agreed scope. Tax advice, return preparation, and filing are not included.
For your first inquiry, list the tax year, the Kraken products you used, and any other exchanges or wallets.
